It is no secret that extra virgin olive oil is great for your overall health and can help prevent multiple chronic diseases. However, its correlation with mortality hasn’t been deeply investigated. In other words, can the consumption of olive oil decrease the danger of departing this world early?
According to a Spanish research study, olive oil and longevity can be related. This study was conducted with 40,000 participants of the Spanish population, specifically the Spanish sub-group of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Spain), a cohort study of the relationships between cancer and diet, along with other chronic diseases.
Data was collected from men and women ages 29-69. Researchers examined the correlation between olive oil and overall mortality as well as death from particular causes such as cardiovascular disease.
After13 years following the participants, researchers found that people who had incorporated extra virgin olive oil in their daily diet had a lower mortality than those who didn’t. Specifically, individuals who consumed extra virgin olive oil had a 44 percent reduction in mortality due to heart disease and a 26 percent reduction in mortality compared to participants who did not consume any extra virgin olive oil at all.
This makes us aware that daily consumption of extra virgin olive oil reduces the chances of dying from many causes, but particularly from cardiovascular disease. To prove the point, a couple of centurions tapped into the olive oil 'fountain of youth' and they shared their daily regimens with us.
1. Sip on two tablespoons of quality extra virgin olive oil.
This practice can help increase arterial elasticity and reduce vascular pressure to the arteries, reducing the chances of heart attacks and coronary disease. Sipping a little EVOO can help control blood pressure levels and inhibit the development of cancer cells.
This may not be a realistic routine for even the most avid olive oil consumer but one of our centurions said that she drank 1 full glass of olive oil daily.

2. Pour on.
The monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in extra virgin olive oil are associated with lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL "bad cholesterol." Additionally, it will control blood sugar and insulin levels which is particularly helpful for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
The biggest organ of the body is the skin, plus it requires care by means of moisture. Olive oil has been used for tens of thousands of years as a moisturizer and wound healer. In addition, it seems that it may protect against damage of the skin after exposure to UV light. Olive oil for the skin just rocks!
Apply olive oil directly to damp skin as a moisturizer after showering. The water will help the oil penetrate the skin layers.
